We’re pleased to announce that ByteSnap and a consortium of partners have been awarded a two-year collaborative project, VIGIL (Vehicle-to-Grid Intelligent Control), under a Vehicle-to-Grid competition, funded by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) and the Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

The other partners in the Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) consortium are:

Aston University
Nortech Management
Grid Edge

VIGIL – spearheading the UK’s smart energy market

The VIGIL project is focussed on developing a new communication and control platform for Vehicle-to-Grid/Building (V2G/V2B) systems: an off-vehicle system that controls how, when and the rate at which electric vehicle batteries are charged/discharged with respect to local substation constraints and EV/building energy requirements.

V2G consortium – what we’ll be doing

ByteSnap Design will be developing a communications adaptor, leveraging its expertise in EV charge post design. The communications adaptor will safeguard the flexibility and interoperability of the VIGIL platform with V2G charge-points of varying manufacturers.

In addition, ByteSnap will be developing a V2G mobile app; this will be delivered together with an optimised building management system.

Dunstan Power, ByteSnap Design’s Director, is delighted to be embarking on the pioneering project: “We’re really looking forward to working on this development. Our expertise in embedded systems design – and in particular EV charge post design – is a really good fit with what is an exciting new part of the UK’s energy mix.”

OLEV and BEIS

V2G - BEIS and OLEV

At the beginning of 2018, OLEV and BEIS announced that 21 projects would receive funding of £30m to develop the business proposition and core technology around V2G, and demonstrate those with large-scale trials.

The 21 projects are made up of –

  • 8 feasibility studies
  • 5 collaborative research and development projects
  • 8 real-world V2G trial projects

– and involve over 50 industrial partners/research organisations, one of the biggest and most diverse V2G endeavours in the world. This will include trialling more than 2700 vehicles across the UK.

V2G – clear benefits

V2G - vehicle to grid
These projects represent a significant step towards the transition to low-carbon transportation and a smart energy system.

Enabling EVs to return energy to the Power Grid when parked and plugged for charging, will increase Grid resilience, allow for better exploitation of renewable sources and lower the cost of ownership for EV owners – leading to new business opportunities and clear advantages for EV users and energy consumers.

Here at ByteSnap, we are very excited to be positioned at the forefront of Vehicle-to-Grid development in the UK through the VIGIL consortium venture.
